Why this field gains

Engagements are large, buyers compare several firms before speaking to any, and AI tools are increasingly used to build the first shortlist.

How clients choose a firm

Questions

Questions

How do AI tools choose which consulting firms to name?

They tend to name firms whose own pages, and pages about them elsewhere, state clearly what they do, for whom and with what results. No AI company publishes a formula, but the pattern is consistent with how these tools work: they search, read pages and summarise the facts they find.

Google explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, running several related searches across subtopics and sources. (Google Search Central) A question such as "best ISO 9001 consultant for a pharma plant in Gujarat" may become separate searches about ISO consultants, pharma and Gujarat. A firm with pages covering each part has more chances to be found.

What tends to help:

  • A page per problem you solve, not one page listing every service.
  • Industry pages that show you understand the sector's constraints.
  • Case studies with the situation, the work and the outcome stated honestly.
  • Team pages naming the people who do the work.
  • Mentions on credible third-party sites, such as industry associations and publications.

AI answers also move around. Semrush found ChatGPT cited Reddit in close to 60% of responses in early August 2025, falling to around 10% by mid-September. (Semrush, 2025) Track over weeks, not once. See how we measure.

Which consulting and business services firms gain most?

Management consultants and IT services firms gain most, because engagements are large and buyers build shortlists online before speaking to anyone. HR and recruitment firms gain too, especially in specialist hiring where the employer searches by role and industry.

The research on business buyers points the same way. 6sense's 2025 buyer experience report found buyers choose from one of the four vendors on their Day One Shortlist 95% of the time. (6sense, 2025) The same report found the first contact with a seller now comes 61% of the way through the buying journey, down from 69%. (6sense, 2025) By the time a company calls you, most of the choice is made.

How that plays out by field:

  • Management consultants: buyers search by problem (lean, ISO, succession, cost reduction), so problem pages and case studies matter.
  • IT services firms: buyers, often overseas, compare firms on directories and in AI answers, so clear service, industry and country pages matter.
  • HR and recruitment: employers search by role, industry and city, so employer-facing pages separate from candidate pages matter.

These studies are of business buyers, mostly in the US and often in software, so treat the numbers as a guide. Compare fields in the fit table.

How do companies use AI tools to shortlist consultants and service partners?

They ask an AI tool for options, check the names it gives on Google and the firms' websites, and only then make contact. That order is now common among business buyers.

In a 2026 Semrush survey of US B2B professionals who use AI at work, 41% said they now start vendor research with AI and validate through search, while 75% still use Google or other search engines in vendor research. (Semrush, 2026) The same survey found 66% had spotted vendors missing from AI results. (Semrush, 2026)

For a consulting firm, that means two tests:

  1. Are you named? When a plant head asks "who can help us implement lean manufacturing in Pune", does your firm appear?
  2. Do you hold up when checked? When they search your name, do your pages explain the problem you solve, the industries you know, how an engagement runs and who will do the work?

Firms often pass the second test and fail the first, because their site describes the firm rather than the client's problem. Writing pages around problems and industries usually helps with both.

The survey is of US professionals, not Indian buyers, but Indian companies hiring IT or consulting partners use the same tools. Run a free check to see what AI says about your firm today.

Can consulting firms use case studies and client names?

Generally yes, with the client's permission, because consulting, recruitment and IT services are not covered by the advertising codes that bind CAs, advisers or insurers. The limits come from your contracts and from honesty.

Before naming a client or publishing results:

  • Check the confidentiality clause in the engagement contract.
  • Get written permission for the name, logo and any figures.
  • State outcomes accurately, with the period and how they were measured.
  • Credit the client's own team where they did much of the work.
  • Remove details that could reveal commercially sensitive information.

Where a client prefers not to be named, an anonymised case study still works: "a 400-person auto components maker in Chennai" tells a buyer enough to judge relevance.

Case studies matter for AI visibility because they contain the facts AI tools quote when asked who has solved a problem: the industry, the problem, the approach and the result. A page that says "we delivered excellence" gives them nothing.

If any partner in your firm is also a CA, CS or advocate, check whether their professional body's rules apply to the firm's site. ICAI, for example, bars client names and logos on CA websites. (ICAI website guidelines, 2020) For a structure to follow, see our guide to a buyer-first AI visibility audit.

Should consulting firms focus on Google or on AI answers first?

Start with the pages that serve both, because the same clear, specific content helps on Google and in AI answers. Then measure each separately, since they behave differently.

They overlap but are not the same. BrightEdge research found only about 17% of sources cited in AI Overviews also rank in the organic top 10. (Search Engine Journal, 2026) Ahrefs found Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews cited the same URLs only 13.7% of the time for the same query. (Ahrefs, 2025) So ranking well does not ensure you are cited, and being cited does not require ranking first.

A practical order for a consulting or services firm:

  1. Fix the basics: a page per service and industry, team pages, honest case studies.
  2. Track 15 to 25 Google searches buyers actually type, by city or country.
  3. Track the questions buyers ask AI tools, such as "who are good family business consultants in Delhi".
  4. Review monthly which pages appear where, and which enquiries became engagements.

Do not chase tricks. Google says no special schema or AI files are needed for its AI features. (Google Search Central)
