Key takeaways
- AI tools name the companies they can connect most clearly to the question. Usually that is the company with the clearest facts, the most direct pages and the most mentions on trusted sites.
- The most common causes are an unclear category, no page that answers the question, few third-party mentions, and old or mixed facts.
- Look at the sources AI cites. They show which sites shape answers in your category.
- Fix one cause at a time and measure again. Changes take weeks, not days.
First, check it is really a pattern#
AI answers vary. One answer that names a rival and not you proves little. Before changing anything, ask the same buyer questions several times across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity and count how often each company is named. If one rival appears in most answers and you appear in few, there is a real gap. Our step-by-step check shows how.
Reason 1: AI does not connect you to the category#
If your homepage says "We help teams unlock growth" but never says "B2B attribution software", AI has little to connect you to a buyer asking for attribution tools. Rivals who name their category plainly are easier to match.
How to tell: Ask an AI tool "What does [your company] do?" If the answer is vague or wrong, this is likely the cause.
Fix: State your category, your customer and your main use case in one plain sentence near the top of your homepage and About page. Use the same sentence on LinkedIn, review sites and directories.
Reason 2: Your rival has a page that answers the question, and you do not#
AI tools that search the web look for pages that answer the exact question. If a buyer asks "best attribution tools for agencies" and your rival has a page about attribution for agencies, that page is an easy source to use.
How to tell: Look at the links Perplexity or ChatGPT search cites. If a rival's page is cited, look at what it covers that yours does not.
Fix: Publish pages for your main use cases, an honest comparison page against the rival named most often, and short questions and answers on your product pages. Write in the words buyers use, and include specific facts.
Reason 3: Other sites talk about your rival more#
AI tools give weight to what others say, not just what a company says about itself. Review sites, industry roundups, directories, partner pages and community discussions are often cited.
How to tell: Check the cited sources across several answers. If the same review site or "best tools" article keeps appearing and you are not on it, that is a gap.
Fix: Complete and update your profiles on the review sites that appear. Ask recent happy customers for reviews. Pitch the roundups that list your rivals but not you. Be listed in the directories of your industry.
Reason 4: Your facts are old, mixed or missing#
If your website, LinkedIn and review profiles describe you differently, or your old product name is still widely used, AI may not be sure who you are. Missing facts, such as no public pricing model or no list of integrations, make it harder for AI to recommend you for specific needs.
How to tell: Ask AI to describe your company, pricing and integrations. Note every wrong or missing fact.
Fix: Correct your own pages first, then your profiles. Add Organization schema with your official profiles. Run the free Schema Check to see what is missing.
Reason 5: AI cannot read your site#
If your robots.txt blocks AI search crawlers, or your key pages only show text after scripts run, AI tools may not be able to use your pages at all.
How to tell: Check robots.txt for rules that block OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot or PerplexityBot. View the page source of your product page and check the main text is there.
Fix: See which AI crawlers to allow in robots.txt.
Reason 6: Your rival is simply bigger or older#
Sometimes a rival is named because it has been around longer and is written about far more. That gap does not close in a month. It does close faster for specific questions, such as a use case, an industry or a company size where you are the better fit. Focus there first.
What to fix first#
| If you see this | Start with |
|---|---|
| AI cannot say what you do | Reason 1: plain category sentence everywhere |
| A rival's page is cited for your best question | Reason 2: publish the answer page |
| The same review site or roundup keeps being cited | Reason 3: get listed there |
| AI describes you wrongly | Reason 4: fix facts and schema |
| You are never cited at all | Reason 5: check crawler access |
Then measure again after a few weeks with the same questions. Live AI Monitoring does this every week and shows which rivals move ahead.
Questions and answers
Can I get ChatGPT to stop recommending a competitor?
No, and trying to do so is not a good use of time. Focus on giving AI clear reasons to include you for the questions where you are a good fit.
Do paid ads affect who AI recommends?
Ads in AI tools are shown and labelled separately from the answer, and OpenAI has said ads in ChatGPT do not influence its answers. Being named in the answer itself is earned, not bought.
How long until AI starts naming us?
AI tools that search the web live can pick up new pages and listings within days or weeks. What models learned in training changes more slowly. Track the share of answers that name you over several weeks.
