Questions
Can a mutual fund distributor call itself a financial adviser?
No, not unless it is also registered with SEBI as an investment adviser. SEBI's July 2020 regulation, quoted in AMFI's guidance, says no person dealing in distribution of securities shall use names such as Independent Financial Adviser, IFA or Wealth Adviser unless registered with SEBI as an Investment Adviser. (AMFI guidance on distributor names, 2020)
AMFI's guidance adds that distributors whose registered names contain terms such as Adviser, Advisor, Financial Adviser, Investment Adviser, Wealth Adviser or Wealth Manager must change their registered name. (AMFI guidance on distributor names, 2020) It gives "XYZ Financial Services", "XYZ Wealth" and "XYZ Mutual Fund Distributors" as acceptable examples, and "XYZ IFA" or "XYZ Wealth Manager" as not acceptable.
AMFI also advises all distributors to show the tagline "AMFI-registered Mutual Fund Distributor" with or below their name, in at least font size 12, in printed communication. (AMFI guidance on distributor names, 2020) The guidance records SEBI's clarification that this covers all forms of communication, including websites, apps, business cards and sign boards.
For search, this has a practical side. Pages and profiles that call you an adviser can mislead both people and AI tools, which then describe you wrongly. Use the tagline in your site header, Google Business Profile and social bios, and describe your services plainly: SIP set-up, KYC, paperwork and reviews.
Which searches suit a mutual fund distributor?
Local and help-focused searches, where a person beats an app: "mutual fund distributor in Indore", "sip investment help near me", "mutual fund kyc help", "nri mutual fund investment help", "swp for retirement help". Apps win broad searches such as "best mutual fund" or "sip calculator". They rarely help a retiree with paperwork or a family with a transmission claim.
There are many distributors competing. Valid ARN and EUIN holders stood at 3.53 lakh in June 2026, up from 2.51 lakh in June 2021, according to Cafemutual's analysis of industry data. (Cafemutual, 2026) Being specific about your city and the help you give is how you stand out.
A good starting list of 25 searches might include:
- Your city with "mutual fund distributor" and "sip help".
- Help tasks: KYC update, nominee change, transmission, consolidation of folios.
- Life stages: child education, retirement income, first salary.
- NRI searches, if you serve NRIs.
Avoid searches that imply advice you are not registered to give, such as "financial adviser near me", unless you are also SEBI-registered as an investment adviser. Ranking for them can create the wrong impression. Track your list weekly with Google Visibility and note which searches bring meetings.
Does SEBI's new Common Advertisement Code apply to mutual fund distributors?
The code names mutual funds and asset management companies among the regulated entities it covers, but distributors are not in that list, so ask AMFI and the fund houses you work with how its rules will reach you. (NSE circular on the SEBI Common Advertisement Code, 2026) The code was notified on 8 October 2026 and comes into force on the 180th day after publication, in early April 2027.
The code lists AMFI among the supervisory bodies, and SEBI said the framework was developed with industry bodies including AMFI. (SEBI Board decisions, September 2026) Fund houses will also need to update the material they give distributors, because the code covers advertisements about products under SEBI's purview.
Whatever the final position for distributors, several rules in the code are sensible to follow now:
- No testimonials in promotional material.
- No guaranteed, risk-free or indicative returns.
- No SEBI or exchange logos.
- Where schemes are shown as examples, the line "The securities or scheme(s) are quoted as an example and not as a recommendation" on the same page.
- Sources and periods for every chart or statistic.
Your existing AMFI obligations continue, including the distributor tagline and the restriction on adviser-style names. (AMFI guidance on distributor names, 2020) Check with AMFI before relying on any interpretation; this is not legal advice.
Can distributors share fund performance or top fund lists on their website?
It is risky, and usually unnecessary for search. Performance tables and "top 5 funds" lists can look like recommendations, may become out of date within days, and can conflict with advertising rules on past performance and on presenting a role you are not registered for.
Under SEBI's Common Advertisement Code, from early April 2027, references to past performance are allowed only as SEBI specifies, advertisements must not imply that past performance will recur, and schemes shown as examples need a disclaimer that they are not a recommendation. (NSE circular on the SEBI Common Advertisement Code, 2026) Charts and statistics must state their source and period. Mutual funds and AMCs are directly covered, so their material for distributors will follow these rules.
Content that serves families better and carries less risk:
- How a SIP works, with a plain explanation of market risk.
- What changes when you switch from regular to direct plans, and what a distributor does.
- How to update KYC, add a nominee or claim units after a death.
- How to plan a monthly withdrawal for retirement, in general terms.
These answer the questions people actually type, and they are the kind of explanation AI tools quote. If you do want to show any fund data, use the fund house's approved material and ask AMFI or your compliance contact first.
How do families find a mutual fund distributor through Google and AI tools?
Usually after an app leaves them with a question, they search for a person nearby or ask an AI tool who can help. Typical moments are a first SIP, a child's education plan, a retirement payout, a KYC problem, or handling a parent's folios after their death.
AI tools often answer the first question generically ("how to start a SIP") and send people to apps. A family that wants someone to sit with them then searches locally: "mutual fund distributor near me", "sip help in Nagpur", "mutual fund transmission help".
What they check before calling:
- That you are AMFI-registered, shown with your ARN and the required tagline. (AMFI guidance on distributor names, 2020)
- How you are paid, stated plainly as commission from fund houses.
- What you actually help with, step by step.
- Where you are and how to meet.
A distributor's site that answers those in plain language usually earns more calls than one with market commentary. A Google Business Profile with the same name, tagline and address helps local searches.
Be accurate about your role everywhere, including AI-facing pages: if an AI tool calls you a financial adviser because your site did, that is a compliance problem as well as a trust one. Track how AI tools describe you with Live AI Monitoring.
