Key takeaways
- 66% of agencies say clients are asking for AEO or SEO for AI search, the top service request in AgencyAnalytics' 2026 benchmarks.
- Few marketers measure it yet: 14% track citation visibility in AI answers, in GoodFirms' early-2026 survey.
- The easiest way in is a short audit that shows a prospect who AI recommends instead of them.
- Package AEO next to SEO, not instead of it: monthly tracking, Google AI Overviews, fixes and a report.
- Report ranges and evidence, not a single score, because AI answers change from run to run.
Clients now ask their SEO agency a new question: does ChatGPT recommend us? In AgencyAnalytics' 2026 benchmarks of 494 agency professionals, 66% said clients are asking for AEO or SEO for AI search, making it the service clients most often ask agencies to add. Most agencies are still working out how to answer it.
This playbook covers how an SEO agency can turn that question into a paid service line: how to pitch it, what to package, how to deliver it and how to report it.
What agencies are hearing from clients
Why clients are asking now#
Two things changed what "being found" means.
- Buyers ask AI for shortlists. G2's 2026 research found that 51% of B2B software buyers now start research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google, up from 29% a year earlier.
- Google answers before the links. BrightEdge data reported in March 2026 shows AI Overviews on 82% of tracked B2B technology searches. When an AI summary appears, people click ordinary results on 8% of visits, against 15% without one, according to Pew Research.
So a client can rank first and still be missing from the answer a buyer actually reads. That is the gap an AEO service closes, and it sits naturally next to the SEO work an agency already does.
Step 1: Pitch with evidence, not opinion#
The fastest way to start an AEO conversation is to show a prospect what AI says about them today.
- Pick five to ten questions their buyers really ask, such as "best payroll software for a 40-person startup".
- Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity each question, more than once, because answers vary between runs.
- Note who each AI names, whether the prospect appears, and which websites the answers cite.
- Show the result word for word, with the date.
Doing this by hand takes a few hours per prospect. A pitch report does it in minutes and keeps every answer as evidence. Either way, the point is the same: the prospect sees a rival named where they are not, which makes the case better than any slide.
Step 2: Package AEO next to SEO#
Position AEO as an extension of the SEO retainer, not a replacement. Three simple packages cover most clients:
- AI visibility audit (one-off): a report across the main AI tools, a check of whether AI crawlers and schema let AI read the site, and the top three fixes. Good for opening a relationship.
- Monthly AEO: weekly tracking of the client's buyer questions, Google AI Overviews results, rival and source tracking, and a set number of new or improved pages each month.
- AEO growth: a larger question set, a website audit, ranked opportunities and more content each month, for clients competing hard for AI answers.
Price on the value of being shortlisted, not on your tool cost. GoodFirms' pricing research reports that among agencies that raised prices in 2025 to 2026, 37% cited GEO and AEO services as the main reason, which suggests clients accept AI search work as a separate line.
Step 3: Deliver the fixes that move AI answers#
AEO work overlaps with good SEO, with a few differences in emphasis.
- Answer the buyer's question directly. Pages that state clearly who the product is for, what it does and how it compares are easier for AI to quote. Comparison and "best for" pages matter more than they did.
- Make the site readable for AI. Check that robots.txt does not block AI crawlers, and that schema markup describes the company, its products and its FAQs. A free Schema Check shows what is missing.
- Earn mentions where AI looks. AI answers lean on review sites, communities and industry publications. Getting a client described accurately there often matters as much as on-site content.
- Write from facts. Pages should only state what the client can stand behind. Mentiq drafts pages from the client's own website and checks every sentence against it.
Step 4: Report honestly#
AI answers change from run to run, so a single screenshot or a single score can mislead.
- Ask the same questions the same way every week, so changes can be compared.
- Report ranges, not just one number, and flag a change only when it is bigger than normal variation.
- Keep the evidence: every answer word for word, with the date and model.
- Separate Google AI Overviews from the AI assistants, because they behave differently.
GoodFirms found that only 14% of marketing practitioners track citation visibility in AI answers, and AgencyAnalytics found 41% of agencies facing new challenges measuring ROI. Clear, evidence-based reporting is a real differentiator. Our guide on how to measure AI visibility covers the method.
Common objections, and honest answers#
- "Isn't this just SEO?" Much of the work overlaps, but the measurement is different. Rankings do not show whether an AI answer names you.
- "Can you guarantee we'll be recommended?" No one can. AI tools decide their own answers. What you can promise is measurement, fixes and evidence of what changed.
- "Will it last?" Answers move every week, which is exactly why ongoing tracking is the service, not a one-off.

Questions and answers
What is an AEO service?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) helps a company appear, and be recommended, in AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. For an agency, it means measuring those answers for a client and improving the content and sources behind them.
Are clients really asking agencies for AEO?
Yes. In AgencyAnalytics' 2026 benchmarks, 66% of agencies said clients are asking for AEO or SEO for AI search, the most requested new service.
How should an SEO agency price AEO?
Price on the value of being shortlisted, as a separate line next to SEO. Start with a one-off audit, then a monthly package with tracking, Google AI Overviews and fixes.
Can an agency guarantee AI recommendations?
No. AI tools decide their own answers. An agency can promise consistent measurement, fixes and evidence of change.
How do I show a prospect the problem quickly?
Ask their buyers' questions to the main AI tools and show who is named instead, word for word. A pitch report does this in minutes.
